Sung Kyun Kwan Myeongnyundang was the most advanced Confucian educational institution during the Goryeo dynasty. The school first opened in 1089 under King Munjong and in 1895 it became the site of the modern Sungkyunkwan University. While the site is at the center of the university, classes have not been taught in the building since the start of the Korean war. It is now a historical site, famous for hosting the oldest Ginko trees in the city.
