Jeolla Gamyeong is a local government office that oversees the affairs of Jeolla-do and was located in Jeonju throughout the 500 years of the Joseon Dynasty. This area includes Jeolla-do during the Joseon Dynasty, present-day Jeollabuk-do, Jeollanam-do, and Jeju-do. During the Japanese colonial period, the Jeollabuk-do Provincial Office was built in the place of the Jeollabuk-do. In 2005, when the Jeollabuk-do Provincial Office moved to a new city center, discussions on the restoration of Jeolla Gamyeong began in earnest. It is to restore the historicity of Jeonju as the leading city in Honam and to revitalize the original downtown. After a long discussion, the restoration of the district began with the demolition of the old provincial government building in 2015, and the first phase of the project was completed and opened in October 2020.
